For years, someone had made her realize that a catwalk wasn't the right place for her. Sofía Jirau responded when no model with Down syndrome had ever arrived before.
Puerto Rican, determined and already accustomed to turning obstacles into goals, Sofía was only 23 years old when he had already paraded at New York Fashion Week.
But in February 2022 the time has come to change its history.
Victoria’s Secret chose it for the Love Cloud campaign, along with 17 other women.
With that participation, Sofía became the first model with Down syndrome to appear in a brand campaign.
It wasn't just a fashion deal.
It was an image that until a few years before it would have been almost impossible to see in a campaign of that level.
For a long time large catwalks and advertising have proposed extremely limited beauty standards. Sofía's presence has contributed to questioning that idea, showing millions of people that representation can also change what a society considers normal, possible or desirable.
She had built her own path around two simple words: Sin Límites.
No limits.
Not because obstacles do not exist, but because they do not necessarily have to be the others to decide where a person can arrive.
Sofía Jirau has not only obtained a place in an important campaign.
He occupied a space from which people like you were almost always excluded.
And sometimes the strongest way of responding to those who think you don't belong to a certain world is to come in anyway and change, even a little bit, the way that world looks at others.
