From a plant typical of the arid regions an idea was born that brought two young Chilean researchers on an international stage.

Valeska Faúndez and Emilia Pedrero have developed gummed candies based on **nopal**, a long-term cactus at the centre of scientific studies for the presence of bioactive compounds that are analyzed for their possible effects on glucose metabolism and their potential interest in oncological research.

After about two years of research, the two students have transformed this project into a practical and simple product to consume, with the aim of enhancing a plant known for centuries in many food traditions.

Their work has also attracted international attention.

Thanks to this initiative they have been selected to represent their country to the Genius Olympiad 2026***, an international competition dedicated to scientific and environmental projects made by young talents from all over the world.

The project does not show that these candies can prevent or cure diseases, but highlights the value of research and innovation in the study of the natural properties of plants.

It is the demonstration that great ideas can arise from the encounter between curiosity, scientific method and so much determination.

Because every important discovery always begins with a simple question.
