When he started feeling sick, Dr. Oğuz Basut already had the fate of a patient in his hands.

The surgery was one of the most delicate.

He had to remove a tumor from the salivary glands, operating a few millimeters from the facial nerve, a fundamental structure for the facial mimic.

In such a situation each movement requires absolute precision.

Then the unexpected happened.

The surgeon began to experience a strong malaise. The blood pressure was rapidly dropping, probably as a result of a food poisoning had the previous day.

The simplest choice would have been to stop.

But interrupting such a complex operation, when possible to avoid it safely, also means exposing the patient to new risks.

So the team intervened immediately.

They applied him an IV to the right foot, so as not to hinder the work of the hands and allow him to continue after being stabilized.

The scene, photographed in the OR, quickly toured the world.

A seated surgeon, focused on the surgery, while an flebo connected to the foot continued to administer liquids.

Many talked about heroism.

The University of Bursa thanked him publicly for his professionalism.

But he refused that label.

He simply said he was convinced that any other colleague would make the same decision in the same conditions.

Perhaps this is the most significant part of history.

Not the photograph.

Not the IV.

But the normality with which those who dedicate their life to medicine consider the sense of their work.

Behind every surgery there is not only technical competence.

There are years of study, immense responsibility and the awareness that, in the operating room, every choice can make a difference.

This does not mean that a doctor should ignore his health or work beyond the limits of safety.

It means recognizing the value of a team that can intervene, support the colleague and allow a delicate operation to end in the best way for the patient.

Sometimes the face of medicine is not made of solemn words.

It is made of professionals who, together, do everything possible because who is on the bed has the best chance to return home.
