Kris divorced her husband, but not because she decided to abandon him. He did it while looking for a way to keep protecting him.
In 2008 the life of Kris Armstrong and her husband Brandon suddenly changed after a serious road accident in the United States.
Brandon reported important neurological damage.
Memory and autonomy were compromised and it became necessary to ensure continuous assistance.
Kris began a very different life than the couple had imagined.
He was still deeply linked to Brandon, but he also had to confront a reality where their relationship had changed radically.
In 2010 a difficult decision came.
Kris began the divorce and embarked on the necessary path to legally become Brandon's guardian.
They wouldn't have been husband and wife on the card.
In everyday life, however, she did not intend to disappear.
In front of the court he promised that he would continue to take care of him, regardless of their civil status.
And he kept that promise.
Then in his life came a person who could have considered that situation too complicated.
Kris met James.
He told him about Brandon and his role in his life.
James did not ask her to choose between the past and the future.
Including that taking care of Brandon was part of the person she was falling for.
Kris and James were married in 2015.
Instead of keeping away, James began to participate in Brandon's assistance.
With time a family was born far from traditional definitions.
Kris had built a new life without erasing responsibility and affection for the man he shared with.
James agreed that there was room for Brandon in their family.
And the couple's children grew up considering Brandon part of their family reality.
This story doesn't just talk about a woman standing next to her ex-husband.
It's about something harder to define.
Sometimes a relationship can change shape without turning affection into indifference.
Kris couldn't return Brandon's life they had before the accident.
But he could make sure that in his next life he was not left alone.
And James understood something just as rare: loving someone does not necessarily mean asking him to turn away people to whom he still feels a responsibility.
Sometimes it means helping him take care of it.
