At the age of 19 he had to choose between his family and the man he loved. He chose love, knowing he would pay a very high price.

In 1948, Mary Robinson married Jake Jacobs, a sailor from Trinidad and Tobago.

What for them was simply a love story, for many it was something unacceptable.

Mary's family's reaction was immediate and hard. His father threw her out of the house and forbidden her to come back. From one day to another, the young man found himself without the support of his family, just as he began a new life next to his husband.

But that was just the first difficulty.

In post-war England, a mixed couple had to deal with a deeply rooted prejudice. Mary and Jake met obstacles almost everywhere. Many owners refused to rent them a house, street insults were frequent and building a life together seemed a challenge every day.

Economic difficulties and social isolation also added even greater pain: the loss of their first child.

It would have been easy to surrender.

They decided to stay together.

Over the years they managed, step by step, to build the future they had imagined. Mary completed her studies and began her teaching profession, while Jake found a stable job at the British postal service.

What had begun as a story marked by rejection slowly turned into a long life built with patience, sacrifice and mutual trust.

They remained husband and wife for 75 years.

Their story recalls how prejudice can divide people, but also how much love and mutual support can resist even in the most difficult periods of history.

Because, sometimes, courage does not consist in doing extraordinary gestures. It consists simply in continuing to walk together, even when the world seems to do everything to separate you.
