On her wedding day, Julia wasn't just trying to share a moment with her father. He hoped that, even for a few moments, he could find it.
Dementia had changed the way man recognized people and lived memories. Family faces could suddenly become uncertain, while episodes of a whole life seemed to get away.
That day, even Julia, sitting next to him with the wedding dress, was not recognized immediately.
So the daughter chose something that deeply belonged to their history.
He mixed colors, brushes and a sheet.
When she was a child, she and her father painted together. Julia began to remind her with sweetness, without forcing it, bringing it back to a simple gesture that time and disease did not seem to have completely erased.
He started moving the brush on the paper.
For a few minutes, no photographs, speeches or explanations are needed. There were only one father, one daughter and a habit that had accompanied them many years before.
Then something happened.
The man looked up to Julia and called her by name.
He saw his dress.
He told her she was beautiful.
And he realized that was the day of his marriage.
It didn't mean all the memories were back, or the disease was suddenly gone. That's why those few words had a huge value.
For a short space of time, father and daughter had found themselves.
A wedding is prepared for months: flowers, music, photographs, speeches, times, entrances studied in detail.
But the moment that Julia would bring with her was not organized.
He had come to his father's gaze, when something within him had once again recognized his daughter sitting by his side.
Dementia can make it difficult to reach names, dates and memories. But some ties continue to live in gestures, habits and emotions built over a lifetime.
That day, for Julia, an old brush managed to open for a few moments a door that seemed closed.
And on the other hand there was still his father.
