Valeria Valverde, a young 21-year-old Costa Rican who studied in Florence, was seriously injured on July 2, 2022, after a bicycle fall.
It resulted in severe cranial trauma and was subjected to a delicate surgery of craniotomy to reduce pressure on the brain. Its conditions were extremely critical and survival possibilities were considered very low.
Faced with the gravity of the conditions of his daughter, his mother, Liliana, went to Assisi.
On 8 July he prayed before the tomb of Charles Acutis and left a letter in which he entrusted the healing of his daughter to her intercession.
That same day Valeria started breathing spontaneously.
The next day he started moving and partially recovering the word.
On July 18, a CT showed that brain bleeding had disappeared. On 11 August Valeria was transferred to a rehabilitation centre and its progress was rapid. On 2 September he returned to Assisi with his mother to thank Carlo Acutis.
On 23 May 2024, Pope Francis authorized the decree by which the Church officially recognized healing as a miracle attributed to the intercession of Carlo Acutis.
This recognition opened the way to its canonization.
On 7 September 2025 Charles Acutis was proclaimed saint by Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter's Square, along with Pier Giorgio Frassati.
