To save a student's future, he gave up his career built in a lifetime. And in the end he attended his diploma in the most important role of all: that of father.
Robert Burnside was the principal of Lakota East High School, in Ohio, when one of his students, the 16-year-old Landerius "DeDeDe" Hayes, suddenly found himself without a home.
The situation further complicated when the new address of the boy's mother came out of the school basin. According to the district rules, Hayes should have left the school he was attending.
Burnside, however, failed to accept that a boy already struggling with such a difficult situation should also lose the point of reference represented by the school. He decided to oppose the disposition and allowed him to continue to attend the lessons.
That choice had heavy consequences. The school district considered its behavior an act of insubordination and began an investigation towards it.
At that point, Burnside made a decision to change the lives of both. While continuing to protect the boy, he left his post after a long career in education.
But the story didn't end up resigning.
Together with his wife Angel, he welcomed DeDe into his family, taking on permanent legal protection and raising him alongside their six children.
In May 2026 the moment came that gave an even deeper meaning to that choice.
Sitting among the audience of the Cintas Center, Robert Burnside saw DeDe cross the stage to receive high school diploma. He was no longer there as principal of the institute, but as a father, ready to applaud the boy who had decided not to leave only at the most difficult time of his life.
This story recalls that educating not only means teaching a subject. Sometimes it means choosing to be there when everything seems to collapse, offering someone not only an opportunity, but also a real family.
