Gordon Ramsay today owns restaurants around the world. As a child, some nights were so hungry to get to eat toothpaste.
It is a difficult image to associate with one of the most famous chefs on television.
Yet Ramsay himself told her about the economic difficulties experienced during childhood.
In the house the money was little and the family situation was complicated. His father had problems with alcohol and Ramsay repeatedly told the episodes of violence and instability that marked those years.
But there was also an even more elementary problem.
Hunger.
Ramsay remembers nights in which, at home, there was not enough to eat. He and his brothers ate what they could find: condensed milk and, at some times, even toothpaste.
As a teenager he also had the right to free meals at school, but he told that, sometimes, he was ashamed to use those coupons in front of his companions.
Ten years later, the child looking for something to fill his stomach with became one of the most recognizable chefs in the world.
And it is precisely the memory of that hunger that today has assumed a different meaning.
In 2026, Ramsay initiated a collaboration with Feeding Britain, a British organization engaged in the fight against food insecurity.
The project focuses in particular on school holidays, when many children who during the year can count on meals provided by the school risk losing one of their main sources of regular meals.
Feeding Britain has announced at least 60,000 seats in its children's programs during the 2026 holidays, distributed in 150 clubs in the UK.
Gordon and his wife Tana support the work of the organization, while the chef will also use his notoriety to draw attention to the problem of hunger and food insecurity.
It's not just a charity campaign for him.
When he visits these projects, some foods immediately remind him of his childhood.
That feeling of sleeping with the empty stomach doesn't just belong to the past.
And this is perhaps the detail that makes his story particular.
He built an entire career around food after he grew up in a house where, some nights, just food was missing.
Today he cannot change what happened to that child.
But it can use what it has become to make sure that other children don't have to find out how good the toothpaste can look when you're really hungry.
