When the cabin closed, there was no instructor next to her.

At the age of 20, Leonor of Bourbon found himself alone at the command of a Pilatus PC-21, the aircraft used for the formation of Spanish military pilots.

He had the lead in front.

Behind, more than two years of training in the three Armed Forces.

That flight from December 2025 was not just a photograph for the royal family albums. It was the “suelta”, the moment when a student took off for the first time without instructor after passing theoretical lessons, simulators and accompanied flights.

In the cabin, the title could not correct a manoeuvre.

He couldn't control the tools.

He couldn't make decisions in his place.

They only counted the preparation and ability to remain lucid.

Leonor was born on 31 October 2005 and had grown up knowing that, one day, he could become queen of Spain.

But the military route planned for its future role began far from the planes.

In August 2023 he entered the Military General Academy of Zaragoza.

She was seventeen.

From that moment his daily life changed: awake at dawn, exercises, marches, discipline, physical evidence and life shared with other cadets.

He took oath to the flag and followed an intense program, designed to give her a concrete preparation and not only a formal knowledge of the Armed Forces.

The following year he left the mainland for the sea.

At the Naval Academy of Marín he learned the rules of life on board and boarded the school ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano.

During navigation he knew what no official ceremony could reproduce: shifts, narrow spaces, distance from home and days spent in the open ocean.

The trip didn't just serve to reach distant ports.

It was necessary to learn that on a ship each person depends on the work of others.

Then, in September 2025, the last part of the training arrived.

Leonor entered the Accademia Generale dell’Aeronautica e dello Spazio di San Javier, in Murcia.

Before climbing a plane he studied systems, procedures and security.

He trained in the simulators.

He flew with the instructors.

He repudiated the maneuvers until he considered it ready to face the most delicate passage.

On December 18, the first solo flight arrived.

The engine turned on.

The plane reached the track.

Then he fell off the ground.

Four months later, on April 27, 2026, Leonor returned to fly alone. Not only to address the first detachment from the instructor, but to consolidate autonomy, navigation and system management.

His military career ended in July 2026, after three years between Saragossa, Marín and San Javier.

The Crown heir remains, with all the privileges and responsibilities that this position entails.

That is why it would be wrong to pretend that his experience is identical to that of every other young Spanish.

But it would be equally wrong to reduce everything to a stage.

The planes don't take off on a last name.

The sea does not become calmer in front of a title.

And when a pilot stays only in the cabin, the preparation cannot be replaced by the protocol.

That day Leonor did not prove he was ready to become queen.

I'll prove I'm ready for that flight.

And, thousands of meters from the ground, it was the only thing that mattered.
