The most important thing a mother managed to save at Auschwitz was not an object. It was two names.
Andra was four. Tatiana six. When they arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in the spring of 1944 they were too small to really understand where they were. They were deported from Italy along with their mother and other family members, dragged into one of the most inhuman places ever created.
In that world built to erase every identity, the two sisters had
